Foundry Grade Coal

The largest proportion of Iron Castings are still produced in greensand moulds. Years of experience has shown that high quality castings with optimum surface finish require the addition of Graded Coal into the sand system.

Prepared from selected high volatile, low ash coals, the unique grading is one of the reasons that James Durrans & Sons have supplied the major foundries with carbon additives for so many years.

Customer experience and development has established a full range of gradings.

Preparation of these grades is ensured by:-

  • Consistent drying, grinding, classifying and pack

Coal/Clay Blends
Developments of high pressure moulding systems, especially automotive castings, has placed stricter demands on the greensand system. Durrans have developed Graded Coal/Clay blends to meet these demands. One shot additives of selected Bentonite and Graded Coal/Lustrous Carbon are supplied to customer requirements.

Products are normally custom made in close cooperation with our customers and are:-

  • Blended and not simply ground and mixed together
  • Use only Graded Coal and Bentonite
  • Blended to customer specification or to our recommendations
  • Used as one shot additions
  • Overcomes ADR Transport Regulations
  • Consistency in sand properties
