The James Durrans Group

Dr Alan Moore retires after 34 years service to the Durrans Group as Technical Director. After leaving BCIRA Alan joined James Durrans & Sons Ltd to be based at the head office and main manufacturing site at Penistone, near Sheffield.

The company had been well established in Refractory Coatings and Recarburisers for foundries as well as graded Coal for use in greensand systems. Alan's role was to oversee the technical aspects of production and to explore new markets for Refractory Coatings and Recaburisers.

New markets were developed and today Durrans Friction Carbons are sold worldwide, as these Carbons and Graphites are used on most brake pads and other friction components.

In the refractory coating markets Durrans Trough Blacking PS2 is the signature coating used globally by Centrifugal casters and Alan can claim much credit for its development and continued use. As well as these specialist blackings the introduction of flooding modernised refractory coating application for foundries and also the use of core coatings which dried without drips or runs also improved the productivity and quality of iron and steel castings.

The good news today for the Durrans Group and for our customers is that Alan will continue in the role of Technical Consultant for the Group and his vast store of knowledge and commitment to our customers will still be available.

We will leave the rest of the praise until he finally retires - which we hope will be many years in the future. Alan will be present at the GIFA show to meet customers old and new.
